Overview
Mill Valley was named after the early lumber mills operating in the area. After the 1906 earthquake, many San Franciscans chose to settle in Mill Valley. . The active village-style downtown surrounds a central square, anchored by the Depot café and bookstore in Mill Valley’s former train depot. The streets surrounding the square feature appealing restaurants, cafes, boutiques, bookstores, a theater, an art gallery, and a small inn, all on a European scale.
Mill Valley is beloved by its residents and visitors for many reasons, such as:
- Vibrant cultural life- with a noted film festival, fine arts festival, theater company and music venues.
- Natural beauty- Mill Valley’s location at the edge of Muir Woods, skirting the base of Mt. Tamalpais out to Richardson Bay, gives it one of the world’s most beautiful and varied natural habitat. Mill Valley encompasses forests of sequoia, bay, oak and madrone, canyons with waterfalls, sunny bayfront marsh lands, and open, rolling hilltops with ocean views.
- Great schools- and a talented & dedicated parent community tending to every aspect from cultural enrichment programs to parent education.
Recreation: Mill Valley offers some of the finest in outdoor opportunities on the parks' hiking and biking trails. Stinson Beach, Muir Woods, Muir Beach and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (the Marin Headlands and Rodeo Beach) are nearby. The bike routes & multi-use path connects downtown Mill Valley with most of the schools and all the way through to Sausalito
Mill Valley also boasts several playing fields for soccer & lacrosse; public tennis courts, baseball & softball parks, the Mill Valley Recreation Center’s indoor pool, several fitness clubs and a golf course.
Weather Mill Valley’s weather tends to be a little cooler than those Marin towns farther from the ocean. Mt. Tam blocks fog from rolling into central Marin during the warmest months, but doesn’t keep the fog out of southern Mill Valley on summer mornings when hot temperatures inland draw the cool coastal air in from the ocean.
